Process

Challenge

The goal was to leave behind traditional festival apps and develop an interface that reflects the digital artistic stance of the festival itself. The app should playfully combine information, orientation, and interaction without overwhelming users with complex menu structures or overloaded maps.

Solution

The core of the concept is a 3D navigation system, where users can switch between menu screens with simple swipe gestures, without constantly relying on icons or nested menus.

The AR-supported navigation guides visitors in real-time to festival locations and also serves as an interface for rating artworks; an integrated reward system unlocks exclusive, app-only AR content with sufficient ratings.

Result

The approach was awarded by the festival committee (Riverside Strategy AG) as the winner of the conceptual competition. The concept shows how information, orientation, and immersive experience can merge into a standalone digital festival companion and provides a strong foundation for forward-looking festival and cultural apps.

Overview

For the first Digital Art Zurich Festival 2020, we collaboratively developed a mobile app concept with Riverside Culture that consolidates festival information, exhibitions, and performances, allowing visitors to evaluate artworks across different locations.

Instead of a traditional festival app with 2D navigation and a burger menu, a three-dimensional navigation system was created, inspired by the square grid of the festival logo, enabling quick and intuitive movements between the screens.
